The J McNee Novels

J McNee is a private investigator, based out of the Scottish city of Dundee, the city famous for three things: jam, jute and journalism. But McNee-- a former cop, struggling to deal with the death of his fiancée-- knows the darker side of the city all too well.

As McNee tries to readjust to the world, he finds himself becoming more and more involved with the city's very own "Godfather", David Burns. Burns believes he sees something of himself in the younger detective, but McNee views Burns as everything that's wrong with his city... Across five novels, each with a self-contained central mystery, but with an evolving cast of characters, these two men find themselves coming into conflict, building to a dramatic and terrifying climax.

The first five McNee novels were published in the UK between 2008 and 2015 by Five Leaves Publications and Severn House. They are now available in new editions, published by Big Mycroft Books (for more information on BMB, please see this link here). Click on the images below to get more information about each book, including buy links to various websites (Please note while these books were Kindle Exclusive for a period, they should shortly be available in other e-ditions, and even paperback format - check back for details when these are updated, or you can subscribe to the newsletter for updates!)

There is also a McNee short story published in Maxim Jakubowski's THE EXTRAORDINARY BOOK OF AMATEUR SLEUTH AND PRIVATE EYE STORIES, which reveals the answer to a central mystery from the series that was never properly resolved. To be honest, I'm still not sure if it's "canon" or some kind of alternative universe version of McNee, but it was a fun story to play with, and an honour to see it published in such a superb anthology!
